In recent weeks, thousands of people across Canada have been accused of taking Viagra, a prescription-only drug for erectile dysfunction. Some of these men have been charged with conspiracy to traffic in drugs, a felony.
The case has raised concerns about widespread misuse of drugs, the federal government's response to a recent study by the National Institutes of Health, and the health care system in general.
Viagra, a popular erectile dysfunction drug, has been one of the most talked-about drugs in Canada since the patent for it was expiring in 1998. In recent months, however, more than 5,000 prescriptions for the drug have been written, according to the federal government. The drug maker has argued that the lack of access to Viagra in Canada has caused a huge economic and social impact, as well as increased demand for the drug.
"We have seen the drug companies go to work with the government and they're very concerned about the drugs and they're going to take away their ability to buy the drug and make sure the supply doesn't run out," said Jason Kuzairi, a pharmacist in the North East of Toronto who works in the department of obstetrics and gynecology.
The government has accused the drug companies of "misleading the public" by promoting Viagra and other drugs to their own doctors and advertising the drug as "free medicine."
Viagra was launched by Pfizer in 1998 and the drug has since been withdrawn by many Canadian medical associations and health care institutions.
Pfizer was one of the companies that marketed Viagra.
In June of 1998, the Pfizer-sponsored study was published in the Canadian Medical Association's journal of the American College of Physicians.
In the study, researchers found that more than 80 percent of men between the ages of 40 and 70 who took the drug were taking it, while 80 percent of men aged 70 and above who took the drug were not. The study, which was published in the April issue of the American Journal of Medicine, found that Viagra users in Canada were more likely to have received prescriptions for it than men in the United States.
The Canadian study of Viagra found that more than 75 percent of men were taking the drug without being told they had received a prescription for it.
A number of Pfizer-sponsored studies in the U. S. have found that the drug companies have been promoting Viagra even to their own doctors, according to the FDA.
Pfizer said in a statement that the company had obtained a license to market the drug in the U. under the trade name Viagra.
The Canadian study also noted that Viagra is available in the U. and other countries. It was not clear whether Pfizer was aware of the drug's existence in Canada.
Pfizer has argued that it was unaware of Viagra's existence in Canada until a number of studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1999 showed that Viagra in Canada was far more popular than elsewhere in the world.
The drug industry has been accused of using the drug for profit, and that's partly because it is the only drug available for sale in the U.
